Columbia Pictures has just announced that filming has officially begun on Mark Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the sequel to 2012’s reboot of Sam Raimi’s recent trilogy. They have also released the official synopsis for the film:
In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.
With Paul Giamatti cast in the role of The Rhino, this will be the first Spider-Man film to feature multiple villains since 2008’s ‘Spider-Man 3’, in which Thomas Haden Church, Giamatti’s co-star from critically acclaimed dramedy Sideways, played Sandman alongside Topher Grace’s Venom. DeHaan’s Harry Osborne, meanwhile, could eventually be set to pick up the mantle of The Green Goblin, making him a natural fit for the role given his vulnerably villainous performance in Josh Trank’s Chronicle.
Also confirmed is Shailene Woodley’s Mary-Jane Watson, who seems likely to create a love triangle for Peter with Stone’s Gwen. The role of Colm Feore, also on the official cast list, is as-yet unconfirmed, though would seem to feed into rumors surrounding the appearance of either Norman Osborne, a shadowy figure in the previous installment, or The Sinister Six, which would seem to be a logical development for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
With so many characters, new and returning, and promising developments surrounding the disappearance of Peter’s parents, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a lot of dramatic ground to cover.
