Trailer For Fan-Film Nightwing: Prodigal Son

Have you had enough of the grit and pseudo-realism of Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight Trilogy? Do you long for a return to the melodrama and outlandish villainy offered by Joel Schumacher and, more recently, WB TV series Birds of Prey?

If you prefer your Dark Knight with a touch of straight-faced campery, you might want to take a look at Nightwing: Prodigal Son, a fan-made Batman spin-off whose first trailer has just been released:

As you can see, the short film will take place in a Gotham bereft of Batman. Dick Grayson (Brady Robert) is forced to take up the mantle of Nightwing in order to defend the city from the hoard of villains rising up against it, even as he struggles to battle his own personal demons that stem from the untimely death of his family. The trailer also featured glimpses of Catwoman, The Riddler, Harley, Poison Ivy, Deathstroke, luchador Bane, and The Joker in panama hat and Hawaiian shirt circa 1988’s Batman: The Killing Joke. Apparently Dick also harbors guilt over the shooting of Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl, later Oracle.

The catch is: the short film hasn’t yet been made – the cast and crew are looking to raise C$26,000 through Indiegogo in order to fund a 22-25 minute episode of a Nightwing TV show. As they note on their fundraising page, copyright issues prevent this from being for-profit, so, for the simple love of DC, they’ll be releasing the “pilot”, as they’re calling it, into the public domain.
